One Month In

I've been here for a month now, and it's definitely flown by. Today I'm feeling pretty homesick, actually, but I know it'll pass.

Recap:
  • I've been employed for half of my time here so far, two out of four weeks (not bad), including a great television production job specifically.
  • I live in a fantastic house in a nice neighborhood for wicked cheap rent (woot).
  • I have an English boyfriend, who's also a great friend (awesome).
  • I've seen some old friends and want to make new ones.
  • I've revisited some favorite places here, but also want to explore new parts of the city and country.
  • Natalie came to visit, and now a whole bunch of other people are planning to: Caitlin, Elizabeth, Ezra, my aunt Krys, and my dad and stepmom. Whooh!

Things I miss about the US:
  • The Daily Show
  • Fall/winter/general cold weather and snow in Boston
  • Emerson College--being surrounded by friends and constantly busy on productions there
  • Boston Common
  • Downtown Crossing
  • Brookline and specifically Coolidge Corner
  • My family and friends, especially Peter

Things I don't miss about the US:
  • The presidential election coverage
  • Hysterical news coverage in general (as in "hysteria," not laughable)
  • Red Sox fans crowding onto the T (subway)
  • Preps
  • Hummers
  • Evangelicals
  • Libertarians (except Kate and Ezra)
  • Banana hammocks

Things I love about the UK:
  • The sun we've had so far
  • Walking down the street feeling pretty much at home
  • The architecture and parks in central London
  • Usually having something to do or plan for, since there's so much happening in this city
  • The tube (Underground)
  • The fact that people are so much more stylish here
  • Pre-packaged sandwiches that won't make you sick
  • Hot water bottles
  • Drowning in tea
  • Walking along the river
  • Chicken tikka-flavoured crisps
  • Lots of other things I'll remember and post later

Things I don't love about the UK:
  • The tricky media job search
  • The rain (though the sun's trying to come out now, and it's supposed to clear up again starting tomorrow)
  • The lack of 1-ply toilet paper
  • Weak shower water pressure
  • The fact that people are used to escalator etiquette (e.g. standing on the right, walking on the left), but that there's no standard walking patterns anywhere else (on the street, on stairs, etc.)
  • Being treated like a "newbie" to British culture
