Thank. The. Lord.
I was a little downtrodden when I woke up and started the job search again--though I need to nip that attitude in the bud. I woke up earlier than I'd expected (6:40 AM), thinking, thinking, scanning job postings from Friday that I'd checked out twenty times over the weekend--when bam, I had a call from a temp agency at 9:30.
Magic.
She asked if I was free today, and although I was still in my PJs, I said a big, "Haaaail yeah!" (It was more like, "Yes, absolutely!") She gave me an assignment on the spot and told me to head to a boutique advertising agency to be their receptionist for the day.
It was a frantic fifteen minutes in getting ready and another hour or so to get there, but I made it, worked the switchboard, franked the post (AKA weighed and stamped the mail), sent some emails, and ended the day at 5:30.
Better yet: I get to go back tomorrow and Wednesday.
It just feels excellent to have a schedule and something to show for the two weeks I've been here. It's not extraordinarily stimulating work, but it earns me some extra cash money, which can go towards next month's rent.
Such a relief. I'm still applying to jobs in the meantime (morning and evening) and sending out pseudo-networking emails by day as well, to see if industry professionals I've heard about through other folks can make any recommendations for me.
Not too shabby.
By the way, tomorrow's my birthday, so Facebook-wall the heck out of me, would you?

Greetings from Boston. Sorry to barge in this way but I am Associate Publisher of Nicholas Brealey Publishing, the publisher of Kate Fox's Watching the English in the US and read your recommendation of the book with delight. Would you mind if we quoted you on our website or amazon.com?
Best regards,
Chuck Dresner
