Alright, I shouldn't be blogging right now, but I just heard about this exciting new turn of events this morning:
The Youth Mobility Scheme
It's a programme that's set to replace the BUNAC scheme in 2009 (though with no set date yet), allowing anyone from participating countries between ages 18 and 30 to work in the UK for up to two years. The problem?
The US government hasn't agreed to participate in it yet.
If it doesn't, that means that by 2009 (from whichever month the programme is activated) it will be virtually impossible for American young adults to work abroad in the UK without some sort of sponsorship.
I think I'll be fine, since I'm entering on the BUNAC Blue Card scheme before the programmes transition over, but still: how nuts is that?
Great if the government okays it, craptastic if it doesn't work out.
Just thought I'd let you all know.
And by "all" I mean, you know, the twelve people who read this brilliance. ;)

I literally just found out about this yesterday evening; I'm so gutted!
I just really hope the US gov aren't their usual wanker selves and accept sooner rather than later. I've got around a year before I was planning on going over but I'd still rather know my possibilities [or lack of them].
Other than that, I read up to your current post, I'm so stoked for youuuuuu. Have fun in Switzerland :]

I just found this blog. Must say I'm a bit jealous because I also wanted to be an American in Britain, well London to be more specific.
Unfortunately at this point it looks like the US will not be participating in the youth mobility scheme (tier 5). This leaves myself, and many others, in quite a pickle and without any possible entry into the UK.
If you care, please help us by signing this petition:

Thanks!

The Youth Mobility Scheme replaced the old agreements on 27 of November. There are the so called "transitional agreements" which will at least insure people who applied before this date that their visas will be valid. That's a relief for some people...
Hey, I was looking up information regarding the Youth Mobilty Scheme and found your blog. I am so pissed off. I've wanted to live in the U.K since I was a kid. I promised myself as soon as I made my way through college I'd go. I'm going to be graduating in May. Looks like I'm sticking around here for a while.
So yeah, I feel your guy's pain. It sucks because I feel there is nothing we can do to get the U.S on board. We are at the mercy of the government.
Thanks for letting me vent. Best of luck to you all. I'm sure we'll make it over there eventually.

Ditto here. I googled the youth mobility scheme hoping to find some loop hole, since Americans don't seem to be involved.
It's the perfect program for me, since I only want to work there from the gap years between college and masters. So much for that plan... Hopefully they'll sign it soon.
Best of luck, so jealous you got in just in time!
I inclination not concur on it. I over nice post. Especially the appellation attracted me to study the unscathed story.
Nice post and this post helped me alot in my college assignement. Thanks you seeking your information.
