Making some progress on the job search front, I hope, but based more so on personal connections. I'm keeping my fingers, toes, eyes, legs, and ears (?!) crossed for more to come of it.
I heard back from my cousins in Pinner today, and it turns out that I won't be able to spend my first week at their house either, which is a bit unfortunate. They'll be on holiday in Spain at the time.
At first I looked at the situation as, "Curses, noooooooooo, now I have to book a hostel, a pathetic hostel." Then I found the Piccadilly Backpackers Hostel. I saw the photo of their pod-style beds on the main page there, and I was sold. If I'm staying in a hostel, I may as well aim for hardcore claustrophobic, you know?
In truth, I think they're adorable!
So I booked my six nights there and immediately felt like the day had improved. I also found out that flying into Gatwick won't be as much of a hassle as I'd once heard; there's the Gatwick Express, which runs straight into Victoria Station for about £17.
The job hunt continues tomorrow. Some days I wake up terrified, but then I realize/realise that I still have over a month to go. That'll change in three days, when I'll have exactly a month. And then less than a month.
You see how the terror evolves.
Whew!

Hey I have a question for you! I'm doing the Blue card thing and was wondering which website you used to apply for entry clearance? Does it count as a working holidaymaker visa or something?
Hay, I'm Kat & somehow [I honestly forget] I stumbled across here & bookmarked it for later. I just read your entries today & want to thank you for making posts like this! I'll be going over on BUNAC in Fall 2009 & have been dreading the extra visa/clearance/nonsense. I look forward to hearing about your adventures, & I say that in the least creepy way possible, I promise ;]
Hello to both of you! Thanks for reading!
kelsea, I know that if you're Canadian, the visa is considered a "working holiday," but for Americans it's pretty much a standard work visa if you're going through BUNAC, good for up to six months. I wound up deciding not to apply for Prior Entry Clearance because I'm entering the UK before October 1st; as a result, the Blue Card will be fine as my permission to work. My first and second posts detailed the visa application process when I started it; it's impossible to get through to the British Consulate if you have any questions, but if you apply for Prior Entry Clearance (with the Blue Card) you can do it directly through this site: http://www.visa4uk.fco.gov.uk/
And hi, Kat! Thanks so much! I hope it winds up being helpful and entertaining enough over the next few months. I'm determined to keep a blog going this time! Let me know if you have any questions. :)
i stayed (sp?) at st. christophers, the london bridge hostel for spring break and although there was little hot water, it was fabulous. There is bar that's connected and the deals were amazing on drinks. it's a hotbed for backpackers.
